Update on Revisions to Asheville's Chicken Ordinance

According to City Staff the chicken ordinance will come before city council in 6 to 8 weeks. The staff will suggest coop distance of 50 ft to neighbor's residence or 10 ft to property line, with the possibility of not permitting the animals. In some way this will be linked to budgetary concerns as they have  lost one of the animal control officers.

Our job now is to saturate council members with calls and letters and emphasize; that this is the right thing to make available for citizens in light of the economy, and that legalization will provide relief to the enforcement agency because people are doing it anyway and the ordinance protects citizens in the same way that we have the guaranteed right to grow a garden.

We will let you know when the city council meeting is. Please plan to be there. And e-mail council members, even if you have done so already.
